Avoid Common Weight Loss Mistakes

Avoid some of the common weight loss pitfal mistakes by exercising your mind.

With warmer weather around the corner many people are looking forward to getting outside and enjoying scalesummertime activities.  Others are dreading the warm weather and swimsuit season as they struggle with the all too familiar challenge of losing weight.  If this is the year you are finally ready to make changes and lead a more healthy lifestyle, consider the following mistakes which can halt your weight loss progress.

•    Too Much Too Soon-  Many people think about losing weight or getting more fit for a long time before they take action.  Once they finally take action, there is a tendency to try too much too soon which will inevitably result in unrealistic expectations.  For people who struggle with their weight, it is important to understand that results will not happen overnight.  If you are interested in losing weight permanently you must take things slow and steady, knowing that if you stick to it you will eventually reach your goals.

•    Falling For A Miracle Diet-  Have you ever run into a friend you haven’t seen in a long time only to be surprised by a dramatic weight loss?  Many of us fall for miracle diets when we see or hear of someone who has tried it and succeeded in losing a ton of weight.  Unfortunately while many “fad” diets do work initially, keeping the weight off is another story.  If you are trying to fit into a dress for a wedding in two weeks, a miracle diet might work for you.  Long term success is more a change in lifestyle than a miracle cure.
•    Comparing Yourself With Others-  It is important to understand that everyone is different and what works for your best friend may not work for you.  Losing weight, especially for individuals who are overweight or obese is a long process which will include many ups and downs.  While it may take you longer to see the results you wish for, eventually your hard work will pay off in not only a healthier, more trim body but the other benefits you gain from eating right and exercising.
•    Not Eating Enough-  We all know that eating too much is a bad thing, however eating too little can result in a slower metabolism.  It is important to find the balance between overeating and  not eating enough.
•    Weight Loss Will Vary-  Despite your best efforts you should anticipate times when you will simply not lose weight.  This is normal as many people lose a lot of weight at first only to discover a few weeks later that they have hit a plateau of sorts.  Do not let this discourage you or prevent you from working toward your weight loss goals.
In many cases it helps to view weight loss as a bonus to leading a healthier lifestyle.  There are many other benefits that can be more rewarding than weight loss alone.  People who exercise regularly and eat right have more energy, reduced risk of many diseases, sleep better and greatly reduce their stress.  When you look at the big picture losing weight really is just an added incentive in getting healthy.
